What to Do in Saas-Fee | The Capra, Switzerland

Activities & Events in Saas-Fee

Hidden high in the Swiss Alps, Saas-Fee has some of the purest air and highest peaks.  There are fourteen peaks over 4000 metres high surrounding the village, this earned Saas-Fee the nickname of “the Pearl of the Alps”.  With 300 days of sunshine a year, there is an amazing variety of winter and summer activities.  Our concierge will be delighted to arrange a wide variety of activities including ski instructors, mountain guides, winery tours, or anything your heart desires.

In 1849, the plucky local priest, Johann Josef Imseng, raced down from Saas-Fee to Saas-Grund on a pair of hand-made planks to attend to a dying parishioner. Imseng was also a pioneer of tourism in the Saas Valley: he opened one of the first hotels and acted as a mountain guide for his guests.  The first paved road reached Saas-Fee in 1951. To this day, the village has preserved its traditional character, with gabled wooden buildings and slate roofs. There are no vehicles, except electric cars.

Saas-Fee is surrounded by over a dozen mighty peaks over 4000 metres, including Switzerland’s highest mountain, the Dom (4545m). Thanks to its high altitude, Saas-Fee has great snow year-round. As well as 150km of slopes for skiers of all levels, there are 350km of hiking trails, 70km of mountain biking trails, and many family-friendly attractions.  Superlatives come naturally to Saas-Fee. It’s home to the world’s highest funicular (Metro Alpin), revolving restaurant (threes!xty),  and glacier descent (the Allalin Run).

Whatever your preferences, our team of local insiders will plan a personalised itinerary to help you make the most of Saas-Fee.

About Saas-Fee & the Valley

In Saas-Fee

Visit the world’s highest revolving restaurant and enjoy panoramic views like none you have ever seen before.  Ride the Metro Alpin – the world’s highest underground railway – to the Mittelallalin Ice Pavilion, the world’s biggest ice grotto.  This frozen wonderland is deep inside the ancient Saas-Fee glacier.

Take a look behind the scenes of the Hohsaas AG mountain rail company, or check out the highest brewery in the world.  Other indoor activities include wall climbing, zumba and a whole host of physical activities.

In the Valley

Known as the Napa Valley of Switzerland, the Valais has been producing wine since the third century AD. More than 40 grape varieties flourish on terraced vineyards clinging to the slopes of the Rhône Valley. This rugged terrain produces wines full of vigour and character. Wooden canals irrigate the vineyards with melted snow and ice. Stroll along the canals, stopping to sample vintages at small, scenic wineries along the way.

What better way to complement your wine tour with a visit to some of the local cheesemakers and sample some of the finest cheeses in the world.
